"I was fascinated with the equipment first, the fact of making photographs, watching my dad make photographs and processing them in the chicken coop. I wanted a camera of course because my dad had a camera. We went rummaging through grandfather's house, which was next door to where we lived in Michigan, and we came up with a full plate wet process outfit. That's how I learned photography, coating my own plates and processing them before they were dry and then making the prints with solar paper."
